What types of CPAP machines are available?

What machine you use may depend on the severity of your Sleep Apnea, Specialist recommendations and your personal comfort.

There are several types of CPAP machines available.

There are three main categories of machines:

CPAP which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This device provides airflow at a constant fixed pressure to keep your airway open during the night.

APAP which stands for Automatic Positive Airway Pressure. This device uses a specific algorithm that determines what pressure setting to automatically adjust your machine to on a breath by breath basis, to keep your airway open.

BiPAP or VPAP is a type of ventilator, which is a device that helps with breathing if you struggle to breathe on your own. It may help you if you have a medical problem that impairs your breathing. For example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) or obesity hypoventilation syndrome.
