Why is my CPAP machine so noisy?

There are several possible reasons why your CPAP machine may become noisy, such as motor failure, deterioration, filter replacement required.

A noisy CPAP machine can tend to drive you a bit crazy.  The older machines tend to vibrate, hum and be noisy at about 70 decibels. Today, CPAP machines can still make noise, but in comparison to past models they are now whisper quiet at under 30 decibels.

At present all of the main CPAP machines from Resmed, Fisher & Paykel and Philips range between 23 and 27 decibels. However there are other noises to consider such as the noise of the mask itself with the airflow. In general top-entry hoses tend to be a little noiser, however combine that with no humidifer and the noise starts to become rather loud. If you are not using a humidifer, we would recommend a front-entry hose style mask.

There are several possible reasons why your CPAP machine may become noisy, such as:

  • Motor failure – the average CPAP machine is used for over 20,000 hours
  • Over time the foam and rubber insulation around the CPAP motor deteriorates
  • The air intake filter needs to be replaced regularly to prevent damage to your machine
