Medistrom CPAP Backup Batteries
Medistrom is one of the world's leading manufacturers of lithium-ion CPAP backup batteries, designed specifically to power CPAP and BiLevel machines during travel, camping, or mains-power outages. Unlike generic power banks, every Medistrom battery is purpose-built for sleep therapy — automatic switchover when mains power drops, native CPAP voltages, and proven compatibility with the leading machine brands sold in Australia.
The range includes the popular Pilot-12 Lite and Pilot-24 Lite single-voltage batteries, the newer Pilot FLEX dual-voltage battery (12V and 24V in one unit), plus AC power supplies, car chargers, a 50W solar panel, and machine-specific cable kits for ResMed, Philips Respironics, Löwenstein, BMC, and Sefam CPAPs. All Medistrom batteries are under 100Wh, which keeps them within the carry-on lithium-battery limit on most airlines.

How to Choose the Right Medistrom CPAP Battery
There are three current battery models. Picking between them comes down to your CPAP machine's voltage and how often you travel.
- Pilot-24 Lite — The go-to choice for most Australians on a ResMed AirSense 10, AirSense 11, AirMini, or any other 24V CPAP. 95Wh capacity, around 600 g, and typically delivers a full night (often two) of therapy at moderate pressures with humidification off.
- Pilot-12 Lite — The 12V equivalent, suited to older Philips DreamStation, ResMed S9 (via cable), and other 12V CPAP devices.
- Pilot FLEX — Medistrom's newest battery. It automatically switches between 12V and 24V, so one battery covers virtually any CPAP you might own (or upgrade to). 98Wh, aluminium casing for better heat dissipation, USB-A and USB-C ports for charging your phone, and up to 16 hours of run time on lower pressure settings.
Most CPAP machines sold in Australia today are 24V — including the entire ResMed AirSense range and the AirMini — so the Pilot-24 Lite or Pilot FLEX will suit the majority of users. If you're unsure which voltage your machine uses, the answer is printed on the bottom of your power supply or in your user manual. You can also check our CPAP battery configuration guides.
When You Actually Need a CPAP Backup Battery
A Medistrom battery earns its keep in three situations:
- Home backup during power outages — leave it permanently plugged in between your CPAP and the wall. If the power drops out overnight, the battery takes over instantly and your therapy keeps running until mains comes back on.
- Air travel — both the Pilot Lite (95Wh) and Pilot FLEX (98Wh) sit under the 100Wh threshold that IATA, CASA, and most major airlines allow in carry-on without prior approval. Useful for long-haul flights where you want to sleep, and essential for layovers in airports without 240V access.
- Camping, caravans, and off-grid stays — pair the battery with the 50W solar panel or car charger to keep recharging on the road. For more travel tips, see our guide to travelling with your CPAP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Medistrom battery work with my CPAP machine?
Medistrom batteries are compatible with most major brands sold in Australia, including ResMed (AirMini, AirSense 10, AirSense 11, S9), Philips Respironics (DreamStation), Löwenstein (Prisma SMART/SOFT), BMC (Luna G2, M1), and Sefam (S.Box). Each CPAP machine needs its own cable kit, which is sold separately — check the cable kits listed above or contact us if you're unsure which one fits your machine.
Can I take a Medistrom battery on a plane in Australia?
Yes. Both the Pilot Lite and Pilot FLEX are under 100Wh, which is the standard IATA and CASA limit for lithium-ion batteries in carry-on luggage without airline approval. They must be carried in cabin baggage, not checked. We recommend keeping a copy of your battery's specifications and your CPAP prescription handy in case security asks.
How long will a Medistrom battery run my CPAP?
Run time depends on your pressure setting, whether your humidifier and heated tube are switched on, and mask leak. As a rough guide, expect 8–10 hours at typical pressures with humidification off, and 12–16 hours at lower pressures. Humidification and heated tubing draw significant power and will cut run time noticeably.
Can I use a Medistrom battery as a permanent home backup?
Yes — that's one of its main uses. Plug the battery into the wall, then plug your CPAP into the battery. The battery stays topped up and only kicks in when mains power drops out, with no interruption to your therapy. When the power returns, the battery automatically recharges itself.
