Medistrom Pilot FLEX 12V/24V CPAP Backup Battery

Medistrom Pilot FLEX — 98Wh dual-voltage lithium-ion backup battery for both 12V and 24V CPAP machines. Works with ResMed AirSense, AirMini, Philips DreamStation, Löwenstein Prisma, BMC, and more. USB-C input/output, AirMini cable included.

The Medistrom Pilot FLEX is a 98Wh dual-voltage lithium-ion backup battery designed to power virtually any modern CPAP machine — whether it's a 12V Philips DreamStation or a 24V ResMed AirSense, AirMini, or Löwenstein Prisma. At just 540 g in a sleek aluminium body, it's the lightest unit Medistrom makes, with USB-C input for fast travel charging and Unlimited Linking Technology that lets you chain multiple batteries together for extended off-grid run times.

Compatible CPAP Devices

The Pilot FLEX ships with the output cable and short charging adapter for the ResMed AirMini. Cable kits for all other compatible machines are sold separately. Note: the FLEX uses a different cable system from the Pilot-12 and Pilot-24 Lite — Pilot Lite cables are not backward compatible with the FLEX.

Should You Choose the FLEX or a Pilot Lite?

The FLEX is the right pick if you want one battery that handles every CPAP — useful if you own multiple machines, are likely to upgrade in the next few years, or want USB-C charging for compact travel. If you only ever plan to use one specific CPAP, the single-voltage Pilot-12 Lite (for Philips DreamStation and other 12V machines) or Pilot-24 Lite (for ResMed AirSense, AirMini, and other 24V machines) costs less and may be the better-value choice.

Key Features

  • True dual-voltage — auto-detects whether your CPAP needs 12V or 24V and outputs the correct voltage, eliminating the need for separate batteries
  • 98Wh capacity — under the 100Wh carry-on limit set by IATA, CASA, and major airlines, so you can fly with it without prior airline approval
  • Unlimited Linking Technology — chain multiple Pilot FLEX batteries together for run times well beyond a single unit
  • 540 g aluminium body — the lightest battery in the Medistrom range, with a corrosion-resistant aluminium case that dissipates heat better than plastic
  • USB-C input and output (45W max) — recharge the FLEX from a USB-C laptop charger or power bank, or use it to fast-charge USB-C devices
  • USB-A output (5V–12V, 18W max) — charges phones, tablets, cameras, and other handheld electronics
  • Industrial-grade LG/Samsung lithium-ion cells rated for over 500 full charge/discharge cycles
  • 4-stage LED charge gauge shows remaining capacity at a glance
  • 2–3 hour recharge via the Medistrom AC adapter (4–6 hours via 45W USB-C; 7–9 hours via the AirMini's own AC adapter)

Multiple Charging Options

The FLEX gives you four ways to top up, so you're rarely caught short:

  1. AC adapter — use the AC adapter that came with your CPAP, or Medistrom's dedicated AC Power Pack
  2. USB-C port — charge via any 45W-capable USB-C charger or power bank (the most compact travel option)
  3. Car charger — the Medistrom Pilot 24 Battery Car Charger works with the FLEX as well, ideal for road trips and caravan travel
  4. Solar panel — pair with the Medistrom 50W Solar Panel for genuinely off-grid charging on extended camping trips

Battery Run Times by Machine

Medistrom has tested the Pilot FLEX with the most popular CPAP machines at both low (5 cm H₂O) and medium (10 cm H₂O) pressure, with and without the humidifier and heated tube engaged. Run time drops significantly when the humidifier is on, since heating water draws far more power than the airflow motor.

Brand Machine Pressure Humidifier / Heated Tube Run Time
ResMed AirMini Low (5 cm H₂O) N/A 19 hrs 42 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) N/A 12 hrs 44 min
AirSense 10 Low (5 cm H₂O) On 2 hrs 33 min
Off 15 hrs 54 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) On 2 hrs 16 min
Off 11 hrs 20 min
AirSense 11 Low (5 cm H₂O) On 2 hrs 59 min
Off 17 hrs 55 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) On 2 hrs 17 min
Off 11 hrs 34 min
Philips Respironics DreamStation 1 Low (5 cm H₂O) On 3 hrs 13 min
Off 19 hrs 13 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) On 3 hrs 2 min
Off 12 hrs 16 min
DreamStation 2 Low (5 cm H₂O) On 3 hrs 5 min
Off 17 hrs 55 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) On 2 hrs 53 min
Off 12 hrs
Löwenstein Prisma SMART Low (5 cm H₂O) Off 17 hrs 59 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) Off 12 hrs 49 min
BMC Luna G3 Low (5 cm H₂O) On 3 hrs 16 min
Off 27 hrs 8 min
Medium (10 cm H₂O) On 3 hrs 6 min
Off 14 hrs 47 min

Run times are manufacturer-tested estimates. Actual results vary based on battery age, ambient temperature, mask leak, pressure ramp, and whether features like auto-ramp or expiratory relief are engaged.

How to Use It

Two main configurations:

  1. Home backup — leave the Pilot FLEX permanently connected between your CPAP and the wall outlet. If mains power drops out overnight, the battery takes over instantly without interrupting therapy, then recharges automatically when power returns.
  2. Travel use — pack a fully charged FLEX (or two, linked together) and connect it directly to your CPAP wherever 240V isn't available. For more tips, see our CPAP travel guide.

Important — Battery Storage: Fully charge the Pilot FLEX before storing it, and at least every six months thereafter. Allowing a lithium-ion battery to discharge fully during long-term storage can cause permanent capacity loss and may void the manufacturer's warranty.
