CPAP Tubing Guide
Should I upgrade to a heated CPAP tube?
A heated tube is worth considering if you experience rainout — condensation forming inside your hose during the night that causes water droplets to enter your mask or produces a gurgling sound. This happens when warm, humidified air from your machine cools as it travels along an unheated tube, causing moisture to condense. A heated tube maintains air temperature along its length, preventing this entirely. ResMed's ClimateLineAir (AirSense 10) and ClimateLineAir 11 (AirSense 11) are the most widely used options; Fisher & Paykel's ThermoSmart tube performs the same function for SleepStyle+ machines. If rainout isn't an issue for you, a standard tube works fine — heated tubing is a targeted solution, not a general upgrade everyone needs.
What's the difference between 22mm and 15mm (SlimLine) CPAP tubing?
The numbers refer to the diameter of the tube itself — 22mm is the standard bore, while SlimLine (15mm) is a narrower, lighter hose that produces less drag and bulk during sleep. Both connect to compatible machines via the same port; the difference is purely physical. SlimLine is a popular choice for active sleepers who find the standard hose cumbersome.
The AirMini travel machine is a separate case — it uses its own proprietary tubing and connector system that interfaces directly with compatible AirMini mask setup packs. If you want to connect a standard hose to an AirMini, the ZephAir Universal CPAP Hose Connector makes this possible, though you'll lose the ability to use HumidX waterless humidification, which relies on the AirMini's proprietary inline connection, however gain the ability to use any standard CPAP mask.
How often should I replace my CPAP tube, and how should I clean it?
CPAP tubes should be replaced every six to twelve months under normal use — sooner if you notice cracking, discolouration, or a persistent smell that doesn't clear after cleaning. For regular maintenance, rinse the tube with warm water and a small amount of mild detergent, then hang it vertically to air dry completely before the next use. CPAP-specific cleaning soaps are also available in our CPAP cleaning products range and are formulated to be safe on tubing materials. Never use bleach or alcohol-based cleaners as these degrade the tubing over time. For a complete maintenance schedule, see our CPAP cleaning and care guide.
