CPAP Headgear Guide

How do I know when my CPAP headgear needs replacing?

The most reliable sign is a mask that no longer seals correctly despite being adjusted correctly and having an intact cushion. CPAP headgear is made from elastic fabric that stretches and softens with nightly use and washing — over six to twelve months, most headgear loses enough tension that it can no longer hold the mask firmly enough to maintain a seal. If you're tightening your headgear more than usual just to stop leaks, or if the straps feel noticeably looser than when the mask was new, replacement headgear is usually the fix. If leaks persist after replacing the headgear, the cushion or seal may also need attention.

Do I need a full headgear replacement, or just the clips?

If the elastic straps are stretched or fraying, you'll need a full headgear assembly. If the straps are still in good condition but a clip or buckle has snapped or gone missing, a clips-only replacement is all you need — and considerably cheaper. This range includes both options for most supported mask models. Check the product name: items listed as "headgear clips", "buckle", or "back strap" are individual components, while those listed as "headgear" are full assemblies. If you're unsure, the brand and model filter will show all available options for your mask side by side.

What is non-magnetic headgear, and do I need it?

Standard CPAP headgear uses small magnets in the clips to make the mask easy to connect and disconnect. Non-magnetic headgear replaces these with non-magnetic fasteners, making it safe for people with pacemakers, implantable cardiac devices, or other metallic implants that may be affected by magnet exposure. If your cardiologist or specialist has advised you to avoid magnetic products, look for the non-magnetic variants in this range — the ResMed AirFit F20 NM headgear is available here. If you're unsure whether your device is affected, check with your treating specialist before purchasing standard headgear.
