The diffuser allows exhaled air to escape during therapy by dispersing it through a series of small holes, directing airflow away from your face for quieter, more comfortable exhalation. Note that this is the standard multi-hole diffuser vent — it is distinct from woven-mesh style QuietAir vents used on some other masks.

About the Diffuser

The diffuser sits within the mask elbow or exhalation port and is responsible for venting exhaled CO₂ away from the breathing space throughout the night. Because it is in the direct airflow path during every breath out, it plays a safety-critical role in your therapy. Fisher & Paykel's user guide requires that vent openings remain clean, unobstructed, and undamaged at all times to ensure safe, effective operation.

When to Replace

Replacement of the diffuser is damage-based rather than time-based. Inspect the diffuser regularly during your routine mask clean. If you notice any cracking, deformation, or holes that remain visibly blocked after cleaning, replace the diffuser straight away. To clean, use a soft-bristle brush (such as a soft toothbrush) to gently clear each vent hole, rinse thoroughly under running water, shake away excess water, and allow to air dry away from direct sunlight. Do not reassemble your mask until the diffuser is completely dry.
