The integrated diffuser allows exhaled air to escape during therapy, dispersing it quietly and away from your face and sleeping partner. Note that this is the elbow cover with built-in diffuser vents — it is not a separate vent insert or standalone cushion component.

About the Elbow Cover & Diffuser

The elbow cover sits at the mask elbow — the connection point between the mask frame and the CPAP tubing. Its integrated diffuser vents allow exhaled CO₂ to escape through small holes, directing airflow away from the face for a quieter, more comfortable sleep experience. Because exhaled air must always be able to exit freely during therapy, this is a safety-critical component. Fisher & Paykel's user guide requires that vent openings be kept clean, unobstructed, and undamaged at all times.

When to Replace

Replacement of the elbow cover and diffuser is damage-based rather than time-based. Inspect it regularly and replace it immediately if you notice any cracking, deformation, or vent holes that are visibly blocked and cannot be cleared by cleaning. To clean, use a soft-bristle brush (such as a soft toothbrush) to gently clear the vent holes, rinse thoroughly under running water, shake out excess water, and allow to air dry away from direct sunlight. Never use the brush on the Pilairo Q nasal pillow cushion itself — only on the vent and elbow components.
